New Designers 2018

Last week we attended New Designers, with a collective of six graduating illustrators.

It's a four day event at the Islington Business Design Center described as 'a gathering of more than 3,000 of the brightest and most radical new creative minds under one roof to launch the next generation of thinkers, makers and disruptors onto the UK design scene.'
Graduating students from creative courses across the country sharing their degree projects in one place, putting themselves in front of some of the biggest clients and collaborators around.

This year, despite our modest numbers, we saw a fantastic amount of interest. Everyone made interesting connections, some highlights include Tina Pierce getting recognition from Hallmark and an internship with gift card giants Moonpig. Wallace Pockett's children's book was noticed by some of the biggest publishers on the planet. Huge well done to everyone involved for all the effort put in.

The students orchestrated a collaborative zine, along with a crowdfunding page to help fund their space at new Designers. The zine entitled 'Mew Designers' (sorry) featured images of cats, and was Riso printed in orange and black. We decorated a wall with some of the spare pages. Needless to say the cats were a huge hit with the visitors.

Quieter moments found us making use of the floor space for drawing games. Here one person holds the pen, but is not allowed to make any decisions. Passers by may add instructions, (left, right, wiggle, arc upward, zig-zag) creating bold and unpredictable collaborations.
